Social and Emotional Learning Programs (SEL)

Social and Emotional Learning Programs (SEL) for Primary and Secondary Schools

Schools play a pivotal role in providing students with the opportunity to gain greater social and emotional awareness and to practice interpersonal skills as they learn and grow. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) can help students develop the understanding, strategies and skills that support a positive sense of self, promote respectful relationships and build student capacity to recognise and manage their own emotions and make responsible decisions.

Further, according to the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) quality teaching of SEL promotes student satisfaction, success and academic engagement, outcomes and achievement.

We want young people to:

  • Develop effective social relationships such as learning how to work in a group and how to understand and relate to others from different cultures and backgrounds
  • Be caring individuals with concern and respect for others
  • Understand how their society works and be prepared to take on the roles that are necessary for future progress
  • Develop good character and make sound moral decisions.

Why Teach SEL?

  • Emotions affect how and what we learn
  • Schools are social places - relationships provide foundation for learning
  • Reduces barriers to learning
  • SEL skills can be taught
  • Aligns with the academic agenda of schools - has a positive impact on academic performance
  • Provides acknowledgement and support for things teachers already do
